When Should I Take My Canberra Holiday? Considerations for Every Season

Canberra has something for everyone, from the outdoor adventurer to the history lover. You've always wanted to visit Canberra, but you wonder when to plan your holiday.

Each season in Canberra brings unique events, weather and tourists. Use this guide to decide when your family would most enjoy a Canberra holiday.

Summer (December-February)

Pack your swimming gear and your sunscreen for outdoor adventures. Summer in Canberra boasts pleasantly warm temperatures. In January, the mean maximum temperature is 28.5 degrees C (83.3 degrees F). The sun shines for about 9 hours a day during the summer months, so you have plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors.

Keep in mind that light rain is fairly consistent throughout the year. December has the lightest rain of any time of the year (46.1 mm), but it's not much less than July (52.4 mm). So bring a jacket just in case.

During the summer, many holiday makers enjoy water sports like sailing and fishing at nearby Lake Burley Griffin. Workers created this expansive

lake in 1963 by damming the Molonglo River. Many parks and attractions sit next to the lake, such as the National Gallery and National Museum.

Consider visiting during Canberra's National Multicultural Festival on February 12 - 14. The 2016 festival will feature performances by bands like The Black Sorrows and Digging Roots. It will also include a carnival parade and the diverse European Union village.

Autumn (March-May)

If you prefer mild weather, autumn is a good time to visit Canberra. The average temperature in April is 20.1 degrees C (68.2 degrees F). The city is at its finest; you can watch the leaves change colours in full autumn splendour.

Visit Canberra near Anzac Day on April 25. The Australian War Memorial holds a morning ceremony to remember the brave soldiers who entered the First World War.

If you're a runner, consider entering the Canberra Marathon in April. In 2016, it will be held on April 10 at 6:25 am.

The 50 th National Folk Festival will be held March 24 to 28 at Exhibition Park. And you won't want to miss the Canberra Balloon Spectacular, where hot air balloons launch into the sunrise each morning for nine days. It's scheduled for March 12 to 20 in 2016.

Winter (June-August)

Many tourists enjoy Canberra in the winter because it is cool, but not freezing. June's average temperatures sit at 12.3 degrees C (54.1 degrees F). You can still enjoy brisk outdoor walks on most days, although you will have to face some cold, misty weather.

If you live for winter sports, don't worry-you'll enjoy light snow in the nearby Australian Alps, a popular place to ski and snowboard. Your children will love a weekend visit to Corin Forest Mountain Resort, where they can toboggan and play in the snow.

Spring (September-November)

Spring is pleasantly sunny in Canberra, with temperatures around 19 degrees C (66 degrees F). Rain is more likely in spring than in other seasons, but that doesn't mean it happens daily.

Your family can enjoy many beautiful natural sights in the spring. The most popular spring event, Floriade, celebrates Canberra's springtime beauty. Thousands of visitors from around the world visit Commonwealth Park to see millions of tulips and other flowers. Along with seeing the flowers during the day, you can also see live performances at Floriade's NightFest.

Spring is the most popular tourist season, so choose a different season if you want to avoid crowds.

No matter which season you choose to visit, you're sure to enjoy Canberra's beautiful sights and family-friendly attractions. Book your flight, find a comfortable hotel to stay in and enjoy your Canberra holiday.
